 June 27, 2006

Committee Members Present: Lula Bauer ( Director ), Bryan Ahearn, Clarence Jones, Wendell Doman, Karen Parker, Ruben Bolognesi ( Administrator )

Meeting Notes

Penalty Points Accumulation: FREE Phoenix U14 Division 2 – 17 Total Points ( 6 Current + 11 Carry Over )
Team Members Present: Head Coach, Player, Parent.

The player started out the team’s testimony by stating that she actually received 2 yellow cards during the season.  She continued by explaining the play for which she received the card, which had to do with a late tackle.

The Head Coach ( HC ) took responsibility for both cards he received.  He stated that on both occasions he did not agreed with the way the Center Referee was calling the game, and one of them included an argument with the Assistant Referee.

A Committee Member ( CM ) asked the HC if he attended the Positive Alliance Course, part of the sanction the team had received last season for the accumulation of 22 penalty points.  The HC responded positively.  The same CM asked him if he got anything out of it, to which the HC responded “Not really.”

A second CM commended the player for admitting that she had received a second card during the season. He continued stating that he felt a sense of arrogance from the HC, mainly because he kept bringing up that he had played professionally for a long time, and kept comparing the way the games were called and played in England and Scotland with how it was done here in the States.  The CM told the HC that the American attitude toward soccer is quite different compared to the rest of the world, and continued by saying: “We are growing, please let us grow.”

The Director closed the hearing by speaking to the HC by telling him that until he owns his mistakes, he will not be able to correct them.

DECISION:

After deliberation, the WAGS R & D Committee decided the following:

Penalty Points Accumulation – SAC United U14 Division 1 – 19 Penalty Points ( 16 Current + 3 Carry Over )

Team Members Present: Head Coach, Assistant Coach, TSL, Team Treasurer, Players ( 4 ), Parents.

The head Coach ( HC ) started her testimony by mentioning that this was her 7th year in WAGS, but it was her first year with this team.  She immediately brought up game # 3219 which earned the team 10 of their 16 current points.

One of the SAC United parents had “had it” with the Center Referee.

The parent made a few inappropriate comments, which lead to an ejection. This situation escalated after a player received a hard foul.  After the hard foul occurred, the Player who received the hard foul sister, who was a spectator, stepped on the field and made improper comments to the referee.  The Player’s sister was also ejected from the pitch.

The HC had a meeting with the Player’s family concerning the ejection from the game.  She asked them to write letters of apology to the team, CR, and to the opposing team.  The family refused to comply with this request, therefore was asked to leave the team.

She continued by stating that all the players that received a card with the exception of 1 player, are no longer on the team.

The HC also stated that she had a meeting with the team after the season to discuss her concerns about accumulating so many penalty points as well as her expectations for the following season.

The Assistant Coach stated that the team had agreed to serve an additional game for every red card received.

The Committee Members commended the HC for the way the HC handled the situation as well as her approach to correct “old habits” that she has encountered as a the new HC.

A secondary issue surfaced concerning the SAC United HC not serving a “sit-out” after the game in question.  The HC stated that she was not aware that she had to sit out based on a parent ejection.

After deliberation, the Committee directs the following

The Head Coach is suspended for the next WAGS league game. . Please remember that a sit out form must to be mailed to the WAGS R&D Director for each game a player / team official sits out.
SAC United Premier vs. PSC United 92, the game that the HC was to serve her sit-out, is ruled a forfeit and will be recorded as a 3-0 win for the PSC United 92.

The SAC United Premier HC will receive an oral censure for the amount of penalty points accumulated this season.

The SAC United Premier U14 D1 was informed that they have the right to appeal the decision of the WAGS R & D Committee according to Rule O, “Protests and Appeals Procedures”.

Penalty Points Accumulation – TSC Nomads U13 Division 2 – 17 Current Penalty Points.

Team Members Present: Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Player, Parent.

The Head Coach ( HC )  read a statement from the Team Manager, which basically explained every card the team received during the season, and closed out by criticizing referees in general. He continued by explaining the red card he received, was due to the roughness of the game and the lack of calls by the Center Referee.  He continued his testimony by explaining why one of his players’ received a card.  He continued by stating that he completely disagreed with the cards his player and he had received.

The Assistant Coach ( AC ) explained why a second player received a card and, as he was doing so, he became very confrontational and used statements like: “…whether you like it or not…” and “…we are here because of the referees…”

As the Committee Members asked questions of both coaches, they became increasing confrontational.  The Members of the R& D Committee felt their behavior was disrespectful and did not appreciate it.

In closing, The R&D Director stated that she was concerned for a number of reasons.  1) the age of the team (U-13) 2) the high number of penalty points this young team has received, 3) the inappropriate behavior of the coaches during the R & D hearing.

After deliberation, the Committee directs the following

The TSC Nomads Head Coach and the Assistant Coach must attend a Positive Coaching Alliance course.  Proof of attendance must be mailed / e-mailed to the WAGS R&D Director.

The TSC Nomads U13 D2 was informed that they have the right to appeal the decision of the WAGS R & D Committee according to Rule O, “Protests and Appeals Procedures”.
