STAR Program - Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  The U12s are playing small-sided.  Are STARs still required?
A.  Yes.

Q.  What is the March 1 deadline? 
A.  Each U12-U13 team must enter three names of STARs in the Contacts list on the league website by March 1.  Names, addresses, phones, and e-mail are required now.  The information on their certification can be entered any time before the season starts if it is not known yet.  The certification information is verified after the season starts.
 
Q.  When do the STARs need to complete the training?
A.  Before Saturday, April 5, 2008.  There will be no classes scheduled after that.
 
Q.  One of our players has a 16-year-old sibling already certified as a referee.  Can they be a STAR?
A.  No.  STARs must be at least 18 years old. 
 
Q.  None of the classes offered fit my schedule.  Are there any others?
A.  Yes, you may attend any New Referee class offered by the State Referee Programs of Maryland or DC/Virginia.  Links to their websites can be found on the STAR information page on the League website.
 
Q.  Do I need to know my USSF ID Number to serve as a STAR?
A.  No.  We don’t ask for that anymore on the registration form.
 
Q.  Are there any referee classes taught in Spanish?
A.  There is usually one class for new referees taught in Spanish.  Contact the STAR Administrator for registration information.
 
Q.  I took the New Referee class in August 2007.  Do I need to complete any training before the Spring 2008 season?
A.  No, you will need to complete an in-service recertification clinic before the Spring 2009 season.
 
Q.  I took the New Referee class in March 2007 or earlier.  Do I need to complete any training before the Fall 2007 season?
A.  Yes, you will need to complete an in-service recertification clinic before the Spring 2008 season. 
 
Q.  How do I register for a class?
A.  Information and links to online registration forms are on the League website.
 
Q.  What is the uniform requirement?
A.  Gold striped referee jersey, black referee shorts, black socks with three horizontal white stripes, referee badge, watch, pen and paper. 
 
Q.  Where do I purchase a uniform?
A.  Many soccer supply stores stock referee uniforms.  The league website has links to local and mail-order vendors.
 
Q.  Where can I find the game-day procedures for STARs?
A.  Look at the STAR page on the League website.
